Norway in August

At the end of August we flew from Newcastle to Stavanger to visit Liz and Kjetil in their new homes. We took the opportunity to explore Stavanger.

On the left you see Alistair by the Breiavatnet lake with the Hotel Thon in the background where we staying. The picture of me was taken in the opposite direction shows the fountain

in the same lake.

The first morning we signed up with Salvatore (yes he is an Italian!) for a guided tour. You will notice that the weather was good but Alistair is not taking any chances. Shorts and tee shirts remained in the suitcase.

Salvatore gave us lots of facts about Stavanger and showed us round the centre before heading out to the site which commemorates Norway being united by Harald in 872.

We visited the old town Gamle where the first settlers came and brought their wooden houses with them. This is just above the harbour and very picturesque. It is now a preserved area after a move to demolish them was defeated.

Overnight a cruise ship had come into the harbour and it was as if a block of flats had been contructed. It dwarfed the town. These cruise ships do not stay long although they are quite frequent in the summer months. I am sure the cruise passengers enjoyed their look at Stavanger but seeing them tied up next to the Old Town looked wrong to me.
